Like a ship anchored in front of the sea, the figure of the Malraux Museum is smooth and transparent; a blend of glass and steel on a concrete base.
Recently renovated by Laurent Baudoin, the building is still open to light but is in keeping with the requirements inherent to the preservation of works of art.
Even though some pieces of classical and baroque art prove the will of the museum to reflect major periods in the history of European art, the collection’s particularity is the importance granted to Impressionism, thanks to the Senn-Foulds donation and some other major pieces. Three hundred Boudins, six Monets, six Renoirs and seven Pissarros: these pieces constitute the largest collection in France outside Paris revolving around Impressionism.
Fauvism is also very present with pieces by Van Dongen, Marquet, Camoin, Dufy or Friesz. Some Cubist pieces by Vallotton, Sérusier or Bonnard add up to this collection which gives us an idea of the conception of Modernity in the 19th century.
