Journée découverte - Berceau de l’Impressionnisme
What with the wide expanse of sky over the estuary, the way you keep encountering the sea at every turn, the bustle of the port and the arresting light, Le Havre was a natural choice for the Impressionists. The world-famous movement was even named after a painting depicting Le Havre's outer harbour: Claude Monet's Impression: Sunrise, thereby ensuring the gateway to the Atlantic a place in art history.
10.00 a.m. "In the Footsteps of the Impressionists" coach tour Many of the most famous Impressionist painters were inspired by Le Havre. This tour will take you to the very places where the "light seekers" set up their easels to capture the shifting moods of the scenery, from the port of Le Havre to its beach via the Bassin du Commerce dock, not forgetting "Le Havre's answer to Nice" − the 19th-century seaside resort of Sainte-Adresse, a favourite with wealthy Parisians. The tour ends with the Hanging Gardens created in a disused 19th-century fort, which have a fantastic view of Le Havre and the Seine Estuary. 12.15 p.m. Lunch in a restaurant in the city centre 2.30 p.m. Guided tour of the Musée Malraux The Musée Malraux building is dazzling in its own right − a glass and metal vessel overlooking the sea and flooded with natural light. But the museum is first and foremost a treasure-trove of pictorial art. With works by Courbet, Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Eugène Boudin, Renoir and many others, the museum houses the biggest collection of Impressionist paintings in France after the Musée d’Orsay. It also has a fine collection of Fauvist paintings featuring works by Marquet, Dufy and Friesz. In other words, it's a must for art-lovers!
Exhibition: "Unknown Degas: The Senn Donation", 12 June to 19 September 2010, Musée Malraux. In 2004, Hélène Senn-Foulds donated her grandfather's collection to the Musée Malraux. Olivier Senn was a Le Havre cotton merchant with a passion for the art of his time. From the late 19th century to the 1930s, he gradually built up a collection. After presenting the donation as a whole, the museum looks in detail at the graphic works, including the set of 47 Degas acquired by Senn when the contents of the artist's studio were dispersed. These 47 pictures are mainly youthful works and preparatory sketches for large historical compositions. The exhibition compares them with works from the Musée d’Orsay. 4.00 p.m. Tour ends.
Times are indicative and may vary. Tour programme offered every day except Tuesdays, subject to staff availability. * Price based on a group of 50 paying participants. Journée découverte - Le Havre / Etretat - Sur les pas des impressionnistes
The stunning natural scenery of Etretat and Le Havre inspired a number of Impressionist painters. Away from the capital and the artificial light of their studios, they were free to try and capture the fleeting beauty of the Alabaster Coast landscapes with their subtly shifting clouds, endless reflections in water and dramatic changes of light.
9.30 a.m. Guided tour "In the Footsteps of the Avant-garde Painters, from the Pre-Impressionists to the Fauvists" This unusual tour offers a chance to compare great paintings with the unique light and scenery that inspired them. Inside the Musée Malraux, a stylish glass building overlooking the outer harbour of Le Havre, is one of the most biggest collections of Impressionist and Fauvist paintings in France, including works by Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro. A short walk along the seafront takes you back in time to the "world's end" − the maritime scenery painted by Courbet and Dufy and the seaside villas of "Le Havre's answer to Nice" depicted by painter Othon Friesz − following in the footsteps of the artists who produced the first modern paintings. 12.30 p.m. Lunch in a restaurant in Le Havre 3.00 p.m. Guided tour of Etretat Once a fishing village known for its spectacular cliffs bathed in dazzling light, these days, Etretat is a world-famous seaside resort. Etretat's romantic cliff landscapes have inspired eminent creative artists from all disciplines − composers like Messager and Offenbach, well-known writers such as Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, Maurice Leblanc and Algernon Swinburne, and of course painters. Monet, Boudin, Corot, Manet and Courbet produced many paintings of Etretat. During the tour, you will learn the history and legends of Etretat and take in sights such as the Falaise d'Aval (the famous marine march) and the Falaise d’Amont, the Nungesser and Coli Monument, the seafarers' chapel, the town centre, with its old covered market, and the medieval Manoir de la Salamandre. 4.30 p.m. Tour ends.

Week-end - Détente et shopping
Relax & shop during a weekend at the Docks Vauban From €48.50/pers.* The Docks Vauban were the first French warehouses to be built in an English style in 1846; they were used to stock merchandise such as coffee, cotton or spices. They were extended throughout the years and now illustrate the outstanding architectural heritage of Le Havre. This prestigious legacy of the maritime past of the city is actually the only historic urban ensemble to have survived the destruction caused by the war. The strength of the Docks Vauban lies in the collective mind which was always nourished with images of the high seas, from the Caribbean to the Strait of Magellan; the “Quai des Antilles” is a reminder of this glorious past thanks to its name. The existing buildings and the layout of streets and paths have been kept. Metal, glass and other translucent materials associated with the wood and bricks of the 19th century warehouses make this shopping & leisure centre a lively and colourful place enjoying plenty of natural light. The Docks Vauban will soon become one of the favourite places of the inhabitants of Le Havre but it is only the first step of a large project of regeneration of the Docks neighbourhood. We invite you to spend two days at the heart of the brand new shopping & leisure centre of Le Havre. Shopping craving? Then why not browse around the 60 shops of the centre?! Feeling hungry? Fancy having lunch with family or dinner with friends? Choose among the numerous restaurants that will offer you a warm welcome in the beautiful surroundings of the Docks Vauban; if the weather allows it, you could even eat at the terrace on the “Quai des Antilles”! You will be staying in one of the nicest hotel to make the most of the charms of the city during your weekend. Sipping a glass of Champagne, you will be able to enjoy a tasty romantic dinner, in a charming restaurant of Le Havre with an intimate atmosphere. We advise you to visit two of the must-see sites of Le Havre: The historic show flat On the first floor of a building rebuilt by Auguste Perret, at the heart of the city centre listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the guided tour of the historic show flat will take you back in time. The furniture, accessories, lights, fabrics, ceramics and every-day objects will allow you to share the daily life and intimacy of that resolutely modern time, so hop in the time machine! The Malraux Museum An unmissable stop for painting lovers, the Malraux Museum stuns the visitor as much with its splendid collections as with its architectural daring: a ship like-building made of glass and metal, filled with natural light and facing the sea... This building now shelters the first impressionist collection of France after the Orsay Museum; you will be able to admire paintings by Courbet, Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Boudin, Renoir and many more. Continue your emotional weekend with a touch of poetry while walking in the footsteps of impressionist painters; follow the “Impressionist Itinerary” by the sea and discover the places which have inspired so many artists. And like them and many more before you, you will be enthralled by the peculiar light bathing Le Havre and the “Baie de Seine”: intense, full of contrasts and like no other! Unless you would rather walk hand in hand and take the “tour of the stairs”; the stairs link the lower to the upper part of the city. After an unusual ride in the funicular railway, this picturesque tour will allow you to discover Le Havre in a different way, to see the sights few people see: the unpretentious and yet prestigious villas and the exceptional views over the Seine Estuary.
